With some sectors struggling to find fresh talent, apprenticeships in health, public services and care shot up from 28,230 in 2009-10 to nearly 58,000 four years later. But what is the future for young people and apprenticeships and how can Skills Platform help?
The government has pledged to create three million apprenticeships by 2020 and to aid that challenge, public bodies, including hospitals, schools and the police, will be set targets to take on even more apprentices.
This comes after recent report from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), commissioned by the Local Government Association (LGA) criticised apprenticeships for failing to tackle youth unemployment saying that school-leavers are being failed by the Government’s apprenticeship drive, with too few places to fulfill demand.
Last year alone, there were 1.8 million applications for only 166,000 apprenticeships in England, leaving most with no hope of securing one and in 2014 almost seven out of ten (67%) went to people already in employment.
Luke Raikes, author of the report, said: “Hundreds of thousands of young people are still not in education, employment or training and many more are in dead-end jobs with little chance of progression to higher skills and wages. But, with the right reforms, apprenticeships can tackle youth unemployment, while improving the skills of the workforce and the productivity of the economy.”
Detailed statistics, revealed in a parliamentary answer to Diana Johnson, the Labour MP for Kingston upon Hull North, showed some sectors are still struggling to attract fresh talent. There were 16,890 construction, planning and built environment apprentices in 2009-10, but this had more than halved to barely 8,000 just four years later. By contrast, apprenticeships in health, public services and care shot up from 28,230 in 2009-10 to nearly 58,000 four years later. The number setting out in careers in agriculture, animal care and horticulture was up 22.4 per cent to 4,480 over the same time.
Skills minister, Nick Boles, said: “We want far more employers to get involved in apprenticeships. This means making sure that we practice what we preach in government, so we’re going require all public-sector bodies – schools, hospitals, prisons and police forces – to employ apprentices.”
To assist in clarifying and protecting apprenticeships, the Government has also this month announced that the forthcoming enterprise bill will make the term “apprenticeship” have a protected legal status in the same way as a university degree.
“If university graduates have their moment in the sun so should people who undertake apprenticeships,”skills minister Nick Boles said.
“Businesses know their value so it’s high time they were recognised both by the public and in law as being equal to degrees.”
